Remembering John Innes

On this day we think of Lance-Corporal John Innes, 17th Bn. Royal Scots, who died of wounds received in battle on 29th September 1918, aged 42.  John was born in Portsoy to Joseph and Jane Innes and left behind a widow Elsie, whose address was 75 Dalry Road, Edinburgh.

A gravestone is dedicated to John at Zantvoorde British cemetery near Ypres in Belgium.

In memory of William McBain, war casualty

Today Portsoy remembers William McBain, Pte 64118, 27th Royal Army Medical Corps Field Ambulance, who was killed in action on 28th September 1918, at the age of 35.  A native of Portsoy, he was the son of John & Agnes McBain who subsequently lived in Coaltown of Wemyss, Fife.

A gravestone is dedicated to William at Perth Cemetery (China Wall) near Ypres in Belgium.

Portsoy remembers Alexander West

Alexander George West was born in Portsoy to Henry & Margaret West, who subsequently settled at Dennistoun in Glasgow.  He served as S/17551 with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and was 19 years of age when he fell in action on 29th August 1917.

Alexander is commemorated by a gravestone in the Aeroplane Cemetery which is situated in the Ypres area of West-Vlaanderen in Belgium.

In memory of Frank Simpson

Today Portsoy remembers Frank Simpson, Pte 81798 10th Bn Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment), who fell in action on 14th June 1916.  He is commemorated at the Bedford House Cemetery, near Ypres in Belgium, as well as on the family gravestone in Portsoy.  Frank's parents were John and Jessie Simpson.

Portsoy remembers James Leslie, Pte 4/8936 Durham Light Infantry

Today, 9th August, marks the anniversary of the death of James Leslie, a native of Portsoy.  James was serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry when he lost his life at the age of 41.  He left behind a widow, Matilda Leslie, who was living at 38, Bedford St, Edinburgh.

James is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.

James C. Forbes

Our thoughts today go to James C. Forbes, Pte 1226 Gordon Highlanders, who was 21 years of age when he lost his life near Ypres on 17th June 1915.  James was the son of William & Agnes Forbes, who farmed at Cowhythe, Portsoy.  He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium and on the memorial at Portsoy School.

William McCulloch

Today Portsoy remembers William A McCulloch, Pte 27289, serving in the Canadian Infantry 15th Battalion, who was killed in action near Ypres on 24th April 1915, at the age of 31.  His father, John McCulloch, was a draper at 13 Aird Street.  William is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial at Ypres.
